Eco-Friendly Trends: How Landscaping Can Give You An Eco-Friendly Home
People are always searching for new ways to have a more eco-friendly home. A great way to do this is to improve your landscaping. Green landscaping is a popular trend in making a more eco-friendly home, and there are plenty of techniques to reduce your carbon footprint. The main areas to focus on are your trees, your lawn, and your garden. Tackling these big areas can make a huge difference in how sustainable your landscaping is. This all sounds like a lot of work, but the results are definitely worth it. You might even find that you enjoy it!
This first one might be kind of obvious, but it’s also important. Planting trees is extremely good for the environment, and certain trees can even improve the energy efficiency of your home. So how does that work? Planting deciduous trees or building your homes next to them is a great way to save some seasonal energy costs. You'll want to make sure they are located on the south and west sides of your homes.
Deciduous trees are a broad term for any trees that shed their leaves. Having these trees in those locations will keep shade on your house in summer, and will allow the sun to warm your home in winter. Using deciduous trees is a great first step in having an eco-friendly home.
Typically, your lawn is a huge part of your landscaping so you want to make it as eco-friendly as possible. Remember green practices will lead to a literally “green” lawn! A big pollution contributor is gas-powered tools such as lawn mowers and weed whackers. You can completely eliminate this pollution by using a manual reel mower. This seems like a scary prospect to some, but these manual mowers are actually quite easy to use. They may take a little longer but you get a great exercise. On top of that, they’re also extremely quiet.
If you have a gigantic lawn, it may be hard to justify the time it takes to use a reel mower. If this is the case, consider using an electric mower. These are more environmentally friendly than traditional mowers and are quicker than manual reel motors. A big part of having an eco-friendly home is eliminating the pollution you produce.
There are a few ways to make your garden more sustainable. The first and most delicious way is planting your own fruits and vegetables. Planting fruits and vegetables can save you money on produce and give you a more sustainable lifestyle. Make sure to use organic pesticides and fertilizers to grow your garden. A great way to save water and improve plant health is using rainwater collection systems to collect water for your garden. Rainwater is chemical free and it costs nothing.
Finally, consider using composting to improve your garden soil. Composting is a process that keeps fresh nutrients cycling through your garden. Use any organic waste you produce to mix with your garden soil. Fruit peels, vegetable scraps, and lawn clippings are all examples of waste you can mix with your compost. This will make your soil extremely nutrient rich, which of course leads to better plants.
All of these green methods of landscaping will greatly contribute to giving you a more eco-friendly home. To find out more about sustainable living and building an eco-friendly home contact Alternative Energy Construction today.
